Balancing Your Energy with Yoga: Why we Practice Yin & Restorative Aerial Yoga
Yoga as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "a spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation." We break the energies down in yoga as Yin (female) and Yang (male). Understanding these variations in energy will help us understand how to use our yoga practice to balance our energies.
The Ying-Yang symbol is a simple way to understand the balance of energy we look to create with our yoga practice. The symbol shows a perfect balance of both black and white energies. Too much of one energy causes a shortage in the other. When energies are in balance, we feel better. Most students doing yoga practice more Yang than Yin practices. Restorative Aerial and Yin Yoga classes are necessary for healthy energy balance. We highly encourage all students to get to a Yin or Restorative class to help keep healthy energy balance.
Yin energy is female energy. It is connected to the moon and is slow, receptive, and cooling. There is a style of yoga called "Yin Yoga" that helps this type of energy. Wickipedia defines Yin Yoga as "a slow-paced style of yoga as exercise, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. For beginners, asanas may be held from 45 seconds to two minutes..." Yin yoga helps slow down the typically traditional "Yang" way that most yoga is practiced. Students like this practice for it's calming, cooling, and meditative effects.
Yang energy is male energy. It is associated with the sun - hot, active, and direct. Styles of yoga that aren't Yin or Restorative are Yang energy practices. The OED defines 'yang' as "the active male principle of the universe, characterized as male and creative and associated with heaven, heat, and light." Yang, high energy classes are great for raising heat in the body. When the body gets heated we sweat, breathe hard, and get a sense of working out or exercising.
Restorative Aerial Yoga is a practice that uses props and gravity to help balance Yin and Yang energies. Our Restorative Aerial classes incorporate the longer held poses, weighted props, and breathing exercises to help create Yin energy. Restorative Aerial yoga is one of the special offerings that we have to share with our students. This is one of our most popular classes. Yin Yoga is also one of our offerings. People appreciate both of these classes for their deeply calming effects.
Meditation is also a wonderful way to balance the dual energies. We add Crystal Singing Bowls to amplify sound healing, using high frequency vibrations to help calm and heal.
